Thanks to British artist Alex Chinneck, that concept is a reality. Carved entirely from polystyrene and designed to be a light as possible, this opulent building positioned in the centre of the iconic Covent Garden, is created to like part of the piazza itself.
With one exception....
It seemingly appears to have separated itself from its foundations, as if rising up and floating in mid-air. But upon closer inspection, the illusion is made possible thanks to some elaborate engineering and impressive aesthetics.
You can't tell the difference between the fake and the real thing, to touch it, to see it. But it's hovering. It's extraordinarily complicated. As long as as many people enjoy it as possible, that's my aim.For the briefest of moments, however, members of the public could be forgiven for thinking they were witnessing the supernatural. Afterall, it's not every day you turn the corner and witness an architectural illusion on such a grand scale.
The seemingly gravity defying work is proudly on display right now in Covent Garden until the end of October. So you only a few weeks to visit it in person.
